Sunday will be the first official day of autumn and it’s quite possible that this season is most people’s favorite time of year (it is certainly mine). The weather is starting to feel cooler each and every morning, the leaves are starting to change colors and there is something that feels so homey about the season. There are so many seasonal things to delight in and the weekends start to feel cozy as we snug into our homes. As we officially start to transition into this most enchanting season of the year, here are some simple pleasures you can take part in to welcome the autumn season.
bring home some mums
Mums are such a beautiful seasonal flower with their many shades of red, maroon, orange, yellow and white. Whether you have a home where you can put pots of them on your front porch or like me you live in an apartment and need to purchase a bouquet, either way it’s a simple pleasure to have them in the home during this time of year.
bundle up in a cozy scarf
One of my favorite simple pleasures leading into Autumn are the days that I get to bundle up in a cozy scarf to go out. Whether taking a walk in the park, visiting the shops or simply grabbing a coffee, an oversized scarf brings a joy that is simply wrapped in coziness.
enjoy a seasonal puzzle
If you have been here long enough then you already know I love the simple pleasures of putting together a jigsaw puzzle and autumn is a season that I especially enjoy doing puzzles. There are so many different themed puzzles on sites like Amazon that can be selected for purchase. So far, my first puzzle of the autumn season is this In the Dark Garden puzzle by Nathalie Lete.
take a walk in nature
Whether you visit a park, botanical garden or arboretum, find a weekend to stop off and get a hot drink and then take a walk in nature to appreciate the changing seasons and the beautiful colors that are stunning, but temporary.
enjoy a seasonal drink
There are so many drink variations nowadays when it comes to autumn. You have the classics such as chai and pumpkin spice, but now there are even more flavor profiles than ever with flavors such as apple crisp, maple and brown sugar. Go out to a local coffee shop and enjoy a seasonal drink or even bring some home to enjoy. Either way, enjoying a seasonal drink is a nice simple pleasure to welcome the new season.
bring home the scent of autumn
While I do love scented candles throughout the entire year, the autumn scent profiles are my favorite. With their spicy and woodsy notes, I really enjoy lighting a scented candle to enjoy the scents of the autumn season. Fun fact, the sense of smell is the closest sense related to memory. Each year that I light a familiar scented autumn candle I am not only delighting in the present moment, but also being taken back to all of those previous autumns before. Whether you like candles, diffusers or incense, welcome in the season with an autumn scent to indulge in this simple pleasure.
enjoy seasonal books
Book companies understood that not only did consumers love good stories, but that they especially love seasonal good stories. I myself am a romance girl, especially the cozy kind. But no matter what you love there is most likely a book out there that takes place in autumn, so why not pick up a seasonal book or two to enjoy?
visit your local trader joe’s
I know not everyone has a local Trader Joe’s, but if you do then now is a great time to visit. They recently dropped their fall harvest line full of all things autumn to enjoy. They also bring out so many other autumn themed items too such as mums, cinnamon brooms, pumpkin beauty items and more. Grab yourself a coffee and make a trip to Trader Joe’s to enjoy the autumn ambience as well as the many items available to purchase.
go to the theater and watch a seasonal film
This one may be a harder one to accomplish simply because film industries don’t release too many good seasonal movies like they used to, movies such as You’ve Got Mail, Practical Magic and When Harry Met Sally, etc. But I did recently go to watch Beetlejuice Beetlejuice as well as the 15th anniversary of Coraline. If your theater is like mine, then they probably play older movies on occasion. Check your local theater to see if they are showing any seasonal films of interest as what could be cozier than enjoying a movie on the big screen with some popcorn and a soda?
enjoy all of the pumpkins
They come and go so quickly every season, so why not enjoy all things pumpkin? Maybe buy some decorative pumpkins for your home, or some real ones for outside, or even pumpkin shaped items like coffee mugs? It’s a fun way to incorporate the season into your home and such a simple pleasure to see them make their appearance every year.
